British tractor pullers heading for Shrewsbury showdown

The first round of this year’s British Tractor Pullers Association Championship is coming to Shropshire over the weekend May 27 and 28.

Morris Lubricants, one of UK’s leading lubricants blenders, has again agreed to be the main sponsor of their local event at the Greenous West Mid Showground in Shrewsbury, which coincides with the first day of the Shropshire County Show on May 27.

The event, which is hosted by Malpas Tractor Pulling Club, is the first for five rounds of the British Championship and is expected to attract more than 30 competitors from across the UK in seven classes. The sport involves competitors sitting on their powerful tractors pulling a sledge weight along a 100-metre track.

Competitors will collect points in the Super Farm, Limited Prostock, Prostock, Supersport and 2.5 tonnes modified classes of British Championship. The 2.5 tonne modified class is new addition to the event this year and will see tractors with two or three engines, which run on methanol, competing.

A demonstration class will feature Legend and Hero, a tractor producing up to 2,500 horse power.

Morris Lubricants manufactures and sells an extensive range of performance lubricants covering a wide variety of application areas, from steam engines to modern-day commercial vehicles and industrial machinery.

Included in the extensive product portfolio is a comprehensive range of lubricants for tractors and agricultural and horticultural machinery. Sales staff will be manning the company’s marquee at the event over the weekend.

Morris Lubricants was introduced to tractor pulling by customer Gary Penton, a director of Oswestry based haulage company Pentons, who has supported the sport for eight years and has purchased a new tractor from Holland to competes in the Prostock class this year.

Based on a Massey Ferguson 1150 with a Perkins V8 engine, the tractor, named ‘Big Boys’ Toy, produces 2,000 horse power and 6,000 revs per minute. On its competition debut in Bristol recently, Gary took first in class.

Andrew Goddard, managing director of Morris Lubricants, said: “We are delighted to again sponsor the first round of the British Championship, which is right on our doorstep in Shrewsbury. We hope the opportunity to see these powerful tractors in action will generate a lot of interest at the show and encourage many of the spectators to return on the Sunday.

“The agriculture sector in general is an important market for the company and we look forward to meeting many existing and new customers over the weekend.”

Julie Ankers, who together with her husband, Onky, is a director of the British Tractor Pullers Association and a member of Malpas Tractor Pulling Club, welcomed Morris Lubricants’ continued support and is looking forward to a competitive event in Shrewsbury. She will be driving ‘Skinny’ in the Limited Prostock class this year.

“It’s great to have such a well known company as Morris Lubricants as the main sponsor,” she said. “This will be the fifth time the event has been held at the Shropshire County Show and it’s very popular with spectators. We expect all the defending champions to be competing because it’s the first major event of the year.”

Morris Lubricants has been manufacturing lubricants in Shrewsbury since 1869. Nearly 150 years of development has seen the company grow to become one of Europe’s leading oil blenders and marketers, with a reputation for quality and service.
