How Oil is Used with Guy Martin (Commercial Vehicle Edition)

Guy Martin has been around lorries his entire life and has officially worked on heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) for 25 years, so he definitely knows his way around a truck. In this new video series Guy and Morris Lubricants’ Technology Manager, Adrian Hill chat about the current landscape of the commercial vehicle sector, discuss the many elements mechanics will need to consider when servicing both trucks and HGVs in the near future and the various changes and challenges that HGV mechanics, operators and maintenance engineers will potentially see in the years ahead.

Quality and the correct choice are vital and Adrian explains to Guy the importance of selecting the correct quality engine oil. It is very important for any commercial vehicle to use the correct engine oil in order to make sure it meets the appropriate manufacturer specifications and current emission standards. They also discuss how oils and lubricants are evolving to meet the forever changing requirements of new engine designs and the adoption of new technologies that will be found in trucks in the future.

In these four special videos, each episodes sees Guy Martin and Adrian discuss important elements of the commercial vehicle sector.  In episode one Guy and Ade discuss– ‘Engine oils of Today’, In episode two they explore ‘What Lies Ahead’ and in episode three ‘The Distant Future’ is discussed. The series concludes with episode four where Guy and Ade take an in-depth look at Transmission and Gear oil.

Episode 1: Engine Oils for Trucks Today with Guy Martin

In this episode Adrian and Guy discuss the developments in commercial vehicle engines over recent years. The progression from the Euro I emissions standard for engines, back in the 1990s, to the current Euro VI release, has seen tougher limits implemented in order to reduce emission levels and promote fuel efficiency improvements. Adrian and Guy review the technology that has evolved to ensure compliance, including the function of aftertreatment devices such as diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and AdBlue Catalysts.

Episode 2: What Lies Ahead for Truck Engine Oils? with Guy Martin

In this episode Adrian and Guy ‘look into the near future’ and talk about the move towards the Euro VII emissions standard for commercial vehicle engines and the steps that are being taken to ensure compliance. Euro VII will see a further reduction in exhaust emissions with aftertreatment devices becoming even more efficient. New engines will also be designed to run on thinner oils to further promote fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 output. Fleet managers, HGV mechanics and workshop technicians will start to see an increase in demand for this new generation of thinner engine oils.

Episode 3 – The Distant Future for Truck Engines with Guy Martin

With new technologies continuing to evolve alongside internal combustion engines in order to meet future emissions reduction targets, Adrian and Guy discuss the three key factors to successful innovation. These being available technology, usable infrastructure, and affordable price parity. These all have to be considered when evaluating the design of future alternative commercial vehicle power options, whether that is electrification, hybrid, hydrogen internal combustion engine or fuel cell.

Episode 4 – Transmission and Gear oils for Trucks with Guy Martin

Adrian & Guy go down into the service pit where the vehicle driveline, dedicated to taking power from the engine to the wheels, is reviewed and how choice of design can contribute to the reduction of emissions.

Adrian gives a design overview of three types of transmission: manual, automated manual (AMT) and fully automatic. These designs rely on tailored lubricant performance to deliver power as efficiently as possible under a variety of workloads, whilst protecting the system components.
