How Oil Is Used With Guy Martin (Steam Locomotive Edition)

Guy Martin loves British engineering, and nothing shows off British engineering skill at its finest than the preservation of historic steam locomotives. These incredible locomotives are a great example of British heritage rail and require an extensive amount of maintenance to keep them on the tracks. It’s extremely important that they are maintained using the correct oils, greases and lubricants to make sure they are running at optimum performance levels, running smoothly, and looking their best. No one knows this better than Guy Martin.

In the new ‘How Oil Is Used’ series, Guy & Morris Lubricants Technical Director, Adrian Hill, meet Riley & Sons Ltd Director, Colin Green, to discuss the correct oils and lubricants to use for these amazing locomotives and why it is so important for the heritage of British engineering to only maintain them with the best quality products.

The talented engineers at Riley’s maintain and operate a number of legendary steam locomotives that operate across the country, including three Stanier Class steam engines, commonly known as the Black Fives. So, this was the perfect location for Adrian & Guy to discuss the oils and lubricants used in these magnificent locomotives.

Each episode sees Guy and Adrian delve into a variety of different elements that are important to consider when maintaining locomotives.

• Episode one reviews the heritage steam locomotive industry and why it is so important to do the correct maintenance.

• Episode two looks at the importance of using quality steam cylinder oils.

• Episode three discusses bearing oils and how they are used on the 'motion' assemblies and in axles.

• Episode four sees the team on the footplate examining the different lubricants that keep the locomotive controls running smoothly.

• Episode five dives into the workshop where Colin explains why they need to be self-sufficient to produce their own components.

• Episode six and the final episode look at the wide variety of ‘ancillaries’ available for all those tough maintenance and cleaning jobs.
