Morris Lubricants Racing Round-Up 2021

Morris Lubricants Racing Ambassadors have all been had a busier year in 2021, after a heavily impacted COVID season during 2020. We have recently spoke to them all about their season, the highlights and their aspirations for 2022.

Lydia Walmsley made the step up to the John Cooper Works (JCW) Class of Mini Challenge UK and made huge improvements as the season went on. Lydia has recently spoken in detail about her season and her aims for 2022.

Lydia finished in 22nd position in the JCW Class overall and in 5th position in the Rookie Cup. Lydia was delighted to have similar lap times at the end of the season to those who have won races and have been in championship contention.

Dave Jenkins 2.jpgDave Jenkins

Dave Jenkins competed at the top of the table for much of the British Truck Racing Championship season, narrowly missing out on the title on the final weekend.

Having been just ten points behind the eventual winner, Dave is excited to be returning to the championship in 2022. The BTRC has recently released the seven dates for racing in 2022, with the first round at Brands Hatch on 16th and 17th April, followed by visits to Pembrey, Thruxton, Donington Park, Snetterton, Pembrey again and Brands Hatch for the final round on 5th and 6th November.

Luke HarrisLuke Harris 2 (2).jpg

Luke Harris was in fine form all through the 2021 season, as he retained his 350cc Upright Grasstrack British Championship and finished second in the 250cc Grasstrack British Championship. He also won the 350cc Grasstrack South Eastern Centre Championship and the 250cc Grasstrack East Midland Centre Championship. The 9-times British Champion never finished lower than fourth in any race throughout the season.

Luke is looking forward to getting back on the bike and enjoying the season in Speedway and Grasstrack and is hopeful of a busier year.

Chloe had a massively successful year in her debut season on two wheels in enduro racing, culminating in her winning the Wor Ladies Enduro Championship on her 2021 Husqvarna TE150i bike. The progression that Chloe showed in such a short space of time; going from “wobbly beginner” to fighting for podiums and winning the championship is a testament to the hard work, courage and determination that she gave throughout 2021.

Chloe will be looking to continue her improvement during the 2022 season.

Ashleigh Morris enjoyed returning to the events she enjoyed spectating at where she grew up, only this time she was behind the steering wheel competing at the Scottish Rally Championship on the closed roads and gravel. To top the experience off, Ashleigh won the Scottish Rally Championship Ladies title and finished in third position in her class.

Ashleigh hopes to compete in the same championship again during 2022.

Catherine.jpgCatherine Potter

Catherine Potter made the step up in 2021 to the adult sized karts; which did take some time for her to adapt to. She persevered however and improved as the season went on at Teesside, culminating in two pole positions, a race win and second place finishes, to finish in second place in the championship.

At Warden Law track, Catherine’s season was highlighted with a pole position, with many finishes on the podium and fourth place position overall.

Despite being one of the youngest racers on the track and one of the youngest ambassadors Morris Lubricants has ever supported, nine-year-old Thomas Potter was in excellent form throughout the season, with the biggest highlight being when he broke a fastest lap record which has stood for over thirty years. Thomas took home fourteen race wins throughout the season and finished second in the championship at Teesside against racers that were up to four years his senior.

At Warden Law, Thomas was on pole four times, won nine races and won the championship overall.

Experienced racer Steve Hill had a solid season as he finished in sixth place in the 5 Nations British Rallycross Championship. The Mitsubishi Evo X racer took home two second place finishes and a fastest lap along the way.

Steve is again looking forward to continuing in the 5 Nations Championship during 2022.

Ovenden Motorsport LtdTristan Ovenden 1.jpg

It was a slightly frustrating season for Tristan Ovenden in his Citroen DS3 Supercar as he finished fifth in the 5 Nations British Rallycross Championship, by just 4 points. Tristan took home a podium finish in the first weekend at Lydden Hill back in May, before getting as high as third in the championship in the season.

Ovenden Motorsport’s junior driver, Will Ovenden, had a very solid season, as he finished second in his first event in the first round at Lydden Hill, finishing second overall in the Junior Championship season.

Sami Bowler made the jump from Mini Challenge UK to the 750 Motor Club Roadsports Series and had an impressive 2021. The racer had an educational year, learning the ropes in a 40-car grid and whilst she was there, she was the only racer on the track who achieved three consecutive top-10 finishes.

Sami is again looking forward to testing herself in the 2022 season.

It has been a hugely successful year for the long-term Morris Lubricants racing ambassadors, as they never came off the podium at all during the season in the ACU British Championships Post Classic Superbikes. Despite cancelled meetings, with one being hastily rearranged at the last minute and at the very last meeting of the year, the rider’s wife gave birth to a baby boy.

Of the 42 races throughout the season, Veryard Racing finished first 17 times, second 21 times and third 4 times, narrowly finishing in second place overall by just 3 points.

Aaron Walker 2.JPGAaron Walker

Aaron Walker concluded his time in the Junior Saloon Car Championship; finishing a very creditable fifth place out of thirty-four. Despite taking home podiums throughout the season, the highlight of Aaron’s 2021 was at Donington Park in October where he rolled his car in practice, causing him to start in position 24 in the first race. However, by the end of the first lap, Aaron was in tenth and by the end of the race was in P7, overtaking 17 cars over the course of the race.

During 2022, Aaron is looking forward to stepping up from junior to senior racing.

The sidecar teams finished in third and sixth position in the British Championship during 2021, despite taking home three race wins and a lap record towards the end of the season.

The teams are hoping to return to the Isle of Man TT in 2022, after the enforced cancellation of the world-famous event in the past two years.

It was yet another successful season for 4x4 off road racer Jim ‘Gigglepin’ Marsden as he won the British Ultra 4 Championship in Bad Penny. Over the past 18 months, Jim has won five of seven races; winning the British Championship and the Megathon at the Rallye Breslau at the end of 2020.

Tom Ovenden had a fantastic debut season in the Cooper Class of Mini Challenge UK, picking up his first race win in the final race of the season at Silverstone, finishing in a great sixth position in the Championship overall and being awarded an award for the Most Improved Driver at the end of season awards ceremony.

Craig Reid won the Second Division of the British Truck Racing Championship in emphatic fashion, amassing a whopping 436 points across six racing weekends. He was a massive 51 points ahead of the his nearest rival and second place finisher in the Second Division of the championship. 

In 2022, Craig will return to the British Truck Racing Championship as he bids for more silverware in his Iveco Stralis 13000 truck.

Bathams finished in sixth position in the National Superstock 1000 Championship, with rider Taylor Mackenzie retiring from racing at the end of the season. The highlight of the season was in the penultimate round at Donington Park, where Mackenzie went from 31st on the grid at the start, to win the race on Bathams' BMW M1000RR.

Billy Grew took on his first gravel events in his Fiesta R2, taking third place in just his second event at Greystoke. Despite having a limited number of events due to the pandemic, Billy was delighted to have got through the 2021 season without any issues, which he believes the Morris Lubricants products contributed massively towards.
